News Impact

A unique Interview

Dear Editor,

On Nov 28, I appeared a very unique interview at around 10.30 am not faced hitherto. I went to appear an interview for the post of Research Officer (Scientist-B), Project Tiger, Namdapha National Park, Miao. The interview was conducted in the official chamber of the Chief Secretary. The interview board was headed by the Chief Secretary as the Chairman and other members being Commissioner, RD  and the Additional PCCF (Administrative & Vigilance).

The very aura was something unusually different. Out of the six shortlisted candidates, two candidates failed to turn up. And among the remaining four candidates, the most experienced one got pruned at the eleventh hour citing age as the reason, though he passed through the scrutiny committee's watchful eyes. The remaining three candidates who were found to be ok in all aspects & respect had to face the interview. After some time, out of the three candidates came my chance to rush to grave.

The interview seemed to be Ok. Many questions in the form of bouncers were thrown at by some board members. Overall it was O.k.

But, I simply fail to understand as to why one of the board members did not ask me a single question throughout the interview session.

I am not conversant with telepathic conversation of questions and answers nor does the normal interview procedure allow it. The only sentence uttered by him was," No need to ask question, Its Ok".

Absolutely shocked I was. Never in my Life, had I ever faced such a unique interview. I am really skeptical about the fairness of the interview, though result is yet to be declared.

Like others I too have been appearing many interviews for long. But if my memory doesn't fail, every interview I appeared, the entire board members had posed questions to every candidate. They award marks individually on various aspects such as clarity of knowledge, analytical ability, personality etc. Based on this, tabulation is done for the final selection of the candidate.

But what to do when one of the board members do not pose a single question?  Will the candidate not lose marks for no fault of his? Does the member have right to award marks without posing any question? Would this not be unfair to some candidates and opportunity for others? Was the interview simply an eyewash? Simply face reading and awarding marks is un-heard of or un-called for. It would be like head counting Tigers sitting in office room rather than making an actual field investigation to get the factual details.

I really fail to comprehend as to why such step motherly attitude was applied in the interview held on 28th November for the post of Research Officer, Project Tiger, Namdapha National Park.

Yours,

Roll No. 6

Where only thugs and back entries prosper

Dear Editor,

Regarding the recent problem of Higher Secondary School, Aalo, I would like to add that one Organisation has given 7 days ultimatum to the management of a school in Aalo for giving transfer certificate to one student who was involved in vandalism of school room and threatened to launch a democratic movement if the student is not admitted back.

Now my question is: What is democratic about protest rally, gherao etc? Today, in Arunachal nobody has any respect for law. Judiciary is a part of democracy and when a matter is sub judiced, one must wait and respect the outcome otherwise it will lead to anarchy which is what is exactly happening in Arunachal.

Whenever a school management or any authority takes disciplinary action, this invariably leads to so called democratic agitation. What about the autonomy of these institutions? That the erring students are fully supported by their parents whereas they should have been role models; it is a sad commentary on the plight of the society we are living in. It is high time that we as individuals as well as society as a whole must introspect and set our priority right. Without discipline and sincerity,  nobody has achieved anything until and unless you are in Arunachal where only thugs and back entries prosper and merit has no recognition.

Yours,

Renaissance

Central forces and Arunachal-Assam boundary

Dear Editor,

It appears that Assam is under the wrong impression that China Border is Assam-Arunachal Border. May be this is the reason why a parallel BSF like border force has been created. It has stationed its military with heavy weaponry pointing towards the poor villagers of Arunachal, waiting for orders to evict, terrorize, destroy the paddy fields, bull doze the school buildings, lay boulders or dig bunkers over village roads.

The Assam state has been found to be using the central forces, the best way. It is known to all that Central forces are given to assist in law and order problem of state and not for its expansion and protection of its self drawn territorial boundaries.

If the Indian Union remains as mute spectator to such state boundary policies of Assam, then the people of Arunachal will be compelled to think that the Indian Union is also of the same opinion.

Where is the authority of the center when it cannot correct the disturbing border policies of one state over a new and weak state?

If the center is handicapped in these matters than at least a bill may be passed for creation of body for state border demarcation based on actual ground situation and not based on the maps once prepared by Assamese bureaucrats posted during early periods of Arunachal without proper survey, thus giving rise to never ending dispute.

Yours,

Founder members not responsible for ABC’s business

Dear Editor,

The Arunachal Bullet Club was founded in 2007 by a 5-members Royal Enfield Riders with Vijay Sonam and Pige Ligu as President & General Secretary of the club. The other members were Capt. A. Tangu, Nayen Kaye and Likha Topu. Within one year the members increased to 35. The club conducted several servicing camps at Naharlagun in collaboration with Shahila Exposition, Guwahati and organised ride to Pangsau pass commemorating the Pangsau pass festival and also to Bumla, the last border outpost as a mark of protest to the repeated claim of China over Arunachal Pradesh.

With the formation of the club, the sell record of Royal Enfield at Guwahati showroom increased. Then at the request of the ABC, the RE company in India had agreed to award an interested entrepreneur to open a showroom either at Itanagar or Naharlagun. The showroom is coming up shortly at Naharlagun.

The main objective of formation of the club was to explore the places of tourist interest in the state at our own expenses and market it to the outside world by organising expedition to various destinations within the state so that the domestic and foreign tourists know about the land and the people of the state.

It was believed that those who ride Royal Enfield (Bullet) is self dependent besides having good moral character and also that he or she can spare some amounts from his pocket for the rides which is a sort of voluntary contributions towards building the state’s tourism map.

Of late, it is learnt that the club members are indulging in seeking sponsorship from various govt and non-govt institutions in and outside the state in the name of ABC. Some of the club members of other state have also complained about mismanagement and dishonest act. In view of the stated fact, the founder members of the ABC has decided to abstain itself from any of the activities of the Arunachal Bullet Club henceforth and also withdraw from the membership with immediate effect.

The founder members of the Arunachal Bullet Club should not be held responsible for any omission or commission other than the ride to Pangsau Pass and Bumla Pass.

Yours,

Vijay Sonam

Some things has to be earned

Dear Editor,

Respect, prestige and money have one thing in common for sure, it has to be earned but path we choose may differ. Whenever we discuss about development in Arunachal Pradesh like it or not we cannot ignore the fact “corruption” and “misuse of fund”. In monetary terms every individual development has its own story to tell, but unfortunately in our state most of the stories are too similar and interestingly familiar and predictable. Corruption cannot be rooted out right away but at least it can be lessened. Don’t be so dependent on this false income, have some dignity of labour. Anything earned through hardship and dedication can never be a victim of finger points. Citizens of Arunachal Pradesh we do readily agree how open minded we are. A mind to accept and practice new ideology is all we need to fight back corruption and to see our state flourishing in years to come.

Not too transparent

According to the latest survey by Transparency International, India's corruption index received a blow after its ranking slipped eight places from 87th to 95th among 183 nations.

India ranks lower than China (75th) on the new list but higher than Pakistan (134th). Nepal at 154th is the lowest ranking South Asian nation.

New Zealand is top and Somalia bottom of the list.

Against the backdrop of alleged irregularities in the recently held Commonwealth Games, India’s perceived corruption levels have gone up, with a corresponding worsening of its world ranking.

Worse, there has also been a decline in India’s integrity score to 3.3 in 2010, from 3.4 in 2008 and 2009, and 3.5 in 2007. These figures are on a scale of zero to 10 with the former being perceived as highly corrupt and 10 indicating low levels of corruption.

The 2010 CPI draws on 13 source surveys from ten independent institutions including the World Bank, Freedom House Foundation and the Global Competitiveness Report, among others. These sources, which provide a ranking of countries and measure some aspects of corruption, range between January 2009 and September 2010.

The report has come even as activists led by Anna Hazare have been pushing the government for passing of Jan Lok Pal bill that will have the power to investigate corruption charges against the prime minister, senior judges and MPs, among others.

The government has approved a draft of the law which allows citizens to approach the ombudsman with complaints against federal ministers and bureaucrats, who are protected under India's present anti-corruption laws. But it remains to be seen what the scene would be as the parliamentarian have been unable to even sit down for a day to discuss issues.

PM says no supra state for Nagas

Imphal, Dec 3: Prime Minister Manmohon Singh today said that there was no plan for a 'supra state' for Nagas in the Northeast. On recent media reports that the Centre was planning a 'supra state' for Nagas in the Northeast, he said "there is no such proposal. He said this during a public meeting while on a day long visit to Manipur along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and central ministers.

He said that integrity of Manipur will be protected and the state is an important part of the union." The public applauded the Prime Minister when he said that the protection of the territorial issue in Manipur was a very 'sensitive one'.

"There were no winners. The only the losers were the common people," Singh said referring to the economic blockades on two national highways at the public meeting.

Pointing out that the economic blockades had severely affected the economy of the state he questioned whether it brought any benefit. "No such thing has happened."

Stating that the central government was working closely with the people of Manipur, Gandhi said "New Delhi may be far away from Imphal, but UPA government under Prime Minister Singh is sensitive."

She said all aspirations could be accommodated through dialogue. PTI

From summer of 2002 to winter of 2011!

Taba Ajum

ITANAGAR, Dec 3: It was summer evening of 2002 and time was around 7 in the evening. I along with a friend was going back home after evening tuition classes and happened to witness a bike accident near Vivek Vihar, Itanagar in which two people got serious injuries. We were young and with lot of courage, we took the victim to the hospital without worrying about police case.

When we reached RKM hospital, authorities asked us about them. We told authorities that they were stranger to us and just for the sake of humanity we brought them to the hospital. Someone from hospital had informed the police and within half an hour they arrived. Police spoke to the victims and somehow managed to contact their parents. After sometime parent’s arrived too and with their arrival emotions started running high. My friend and I was standing in a corner and witnessing the whole thing. When doctor’s finally declared that both were safe and there was nothing to worry, their parents started inquiring who brought them to hospital from the accident site. The nurses told them that it was me and my friend. The accident victim came from well to do family and their parents gave rupees 200 to us as token of appreciation.

Cutting back to 2011, people of capital now dread to help accident victims. There have been numerous incidents where life savers got targeted from the victim’s family. Such trend has lead to people just zipping past accident site without bothering to enquire.

“Last year around December, I along with my friend helped two young boys who had met with accident near Papu Nallah in Naharlagun. We took the victim to Naharlagun hospital and informed police too. Later when their parents came to hospital, they started targeting us. Though we clarified, they were not ready to listen to us,” told one citizen of capital. Further he added, “After so much clarification, including the one from victim themselves, they let us go free. Before we left, the family took our information in detail including what we do and where we live. They were very hostile towards us as if we had hit the two bikers. It was a nightmarish experience.”

Such incidents have become very common in the state capital. A doctor with leading hospital of capital told that it pains them to see victim’s family roughing up such life savers instead of being thankful.

“I myself had witness twice, where victim’s family tortured the person who brought the victim to the hospital. In one particular incident, a very young boy who was hardly 16 year old brought an old man after he was hit by speeding car. Old man died in hospital and after sometime his family thrashed the young boy. It was a very sad incident,” told the doctor.

This kind of act discourages many capital citizens to become god Samaritan.

Mushroom cultivation through Self Help Groups

ITANAGAR, Dec 3: The promotion of Mushroom Cultivation through Self Help Groups (SHGs) under Khagam CD Block, Miao of Changlang District by Alombro Mayu Yaku Chi Amey Aroga (AMYAA) NGO of Namphai-I through the initiate support of NABARD RO, Itanagar has turned out to be a success. The AMYAA (NGO) followed a Ripple Effect Concept success method in the promotion of Mushroom Cultivation in the target villages with SHGs taking the lead role.

The Organization first formed and adopted SANYA SHG of Khasan Jugli Village, Kharsang Circle for practical experimentation of Mushroom Cultivation. The rich harvest of mushroom products by SANYA SHG from the first cultivation in February of this year had great impact on other existing SHGs in the region. The Ripple Effect success of story of SANYA SHG has been a driving force for Susana SHG of New Khamlang Village, Blessing and Sarah SHGs of Songking Village, Aphaung SHG of Old Plone.   All the above mentioned SHGs have gone for the first harvest of the Mushroom Products. There has been good grown of Oyster Mushroom Products. The SHGs are extremely contented with the outcome of the mushroom cultivation. The fresh mushroom products have reached Miao and Kharsang Bazar with Rs. 100 per Kg. The SHGs already got the taste of a new income generation activity in Mushroom Cultivation with evident assurance of alternative source of income. Thus, the process of mushroom cultivation involving economy of time, less labour, use of easily available waste straw as raw material and the conducive climatic condition for mushrooming provides greater possibility of encouraging the SHGs, Farmers and Unemployed youth to focus on exploring alternative sources of income besides their traditional/conventional occupations. The cultivation of Mushroom can be thought of at a larger scale in the form of cluster comprising of a village and cluster of villagers where SHGs, Farmers and Unemployed Youth will be the beneficiaries. The larger products of Mushroom can led to further processing for outside market with value tag prices. This can bring about a new growth of local economy primarily with much significance to the poor in the remote villages. It calls for genuine support and grant of funds from agriculture and horticulture Government Departments. Like the Mushroom Cultivation the food processing process in agri-horti products can create similar stories of success provided the poor avail credit and grant facilities along with specific training packages. The AMYAA (NGO) has initiated the livelihood development process by instilling in the minds of the grassroots community members the possibilities of going for alternatives sources of income based on the available local resources.
